With so many new trends advancing every year it can be difficult keeping up with the industry. Website designers and frontend developers have been deeply ingrained into the newer CSS3 properties, determining the ultimate browser support and quirky hacks. But there are also brilliant CSS2 code snippets which have been unrequited in comparison.
While fine art is a subjective field, graphic design is more formulaic in its fundamentals. An effective design should make people feel a certain way and take a certain action. In this article I’d like to share Gravity Switch’s web design principles and our thinking behind them. Those rules are: define goals first; focus on users second; design for emotion; follow the rules of visual design; build a clear, visual hierarchy; be consistent; break the rules (when necessary); don’t overuse gimmicks; and finally test, measure & improve.
Every body wants to know about What is Flat Design? A flat design looks sharp and brilliant, vibrant, striking color decisions. Flat design means designing without the usual gradients, pixel perfect shadows, and skeuomorphism that’s been rampant in recent years (more on this later) to achieve what appears to be a “flat” interface.
Today we are going to experiment with animations and transitions on pseudo-elements (:before and :after) and we are going to discover their potential. We will talk a bit about animating pseudo-elements and look at four examples that use some special techniques to achieve a variety of effects.
A new generation of Retina displays with high pixel densities is now on the market. Unfortunately, that means your website imagery could instantly become ugly and pixelated if you don’t take action. With the introduction of the iPhone 4 in 2010, Apple no longer measured its screens in pixels, but in points. The scaling factor of the screen changed, which determines how a point relates to a pixel. A Retina display now has a scale of two, so one point is equal to two pixels — if you draw a one-point line, it shows as two pixels wide. If you’re imagery isn’t optimized to account for this, your product won’t make a great first impression.
Advancement in design and programming technology makes for a perfect storm: Now is the best time to redo your website. Technology breakthroughs are constant, but design breakthroughs – what’s that all about? Comedian Louis CK does a bit about how your stomach takes 20 minutes to tell your head that it’s full. He says you can stub your toe and your head knows right away how much it hurts, but why does it take 20 minutes for your stomach to communicate?
With the increasing figures of websites being developed, created, and launched each day, the competition gets stiffer in order to promote products and services among online visitors and users. There are different tools being offered and used by different web masters in order to keep the competition healthy and exciting. Profit is the end goal, and long-term stability in order to stay in the online business where large scale of market has encompassed both novice and professionals. With the introduction of bootstrap, the popularity of the site will be boosted since it has a responsive framework which is integral in keeping sites visibility and visits.
We are gradually getting used to the fact that professional designers don’t have limits; they just simply push boundaries of general conceptions and recreate whatever comes to their minds. One of the best examples confirming this notion is website design with depth perception. Despite the fact that initially it is a two-dimensional medium, nowadays, designers are capable of transforming conventional flat websiteappearance into astonishing 3-dimensional environment by simply establishing an illusion of depth.
Too many programmers don’t pay enough attention to the fonts they use to work, yet coding involves staring at your screen a long and reading complicated and detailed text. A good choice of font for your coding activites can make a huge difference and improve your productivity, so take a look at the fonts in this post if you never considered changing programming fonts before.
WordPress widget plugins are heavily used in WordPress websites and like shortcode plugins they are used to add features and content in a flexible way without any need for coding. Most blog themes for WordPress have fixed widget locations and features for adding lists of posts and categories in the sidebar. While this is OK in most cases more power is sometimes required to build a unique and eye catching website. I have collected a bunch of the best WordPress widget plugins I know. I am fully aware that there is a lot more out there and I may have missed a few good ones. Please let me know if I did and I will consider adding them.
Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) can be considered as a backbone of web design, as it plays vital role while developing dynamic features enriched web applications. Primarily, CSS is designed to enable the separation of document content (written in HTML or a similar markup language) from document presentation, including elements such as the layout, colors, and fonts. This separation can improve content accessibility, provide more flexibility and control in the specification of presentation characteristics, enable multiple pages to share formatting, and reduce complexity and repetition in the structural content (such as by allowing for tableless web design).
Restaurant websites almost always display a beautiful blend of photography and text in their design. A restaurant’s main focus is always food, so there is no better way to attract their potential customers than displaying amazing photographs of delicious food. The photos of food can be showcased in a variety of different ways, for instance in the form of sliders, tiles etc. Food has the power to move even the laziest people, so photos of yummy and tasty food always does the job.
