These days the first thing we think of when designing a theme is 'where are we going to put the slider'. Sliders are probably the best way to display featured content at the moment. Users also appreciate the effect that they create. I think that we are reaching a point where sites with high content need a slider of some kind on their home page in order to display enough info / images without stretching the page too long.
