Wordpress plugins are what really make Wordpress flexible and modular.With that said, I would definitely use pre-made Wordpress plugins when needed after skimming through the code to assure it is neatly coded for security purposes. If I don't like what I see from the publicly available plugins, I would definitely consider coding my own.
