We as humans have always been in awe when it comes to Space, and the idea of living in space has always been on our minds. During the 1970s, scientists at NASA’s Ames Research Center conducted three different studies, the purpose of this research was to imagine how humanity might be able to survive in Space through the construction of huge space stations, or colonies. Recently NASA released the concepts for living in space, if you enjoy them as much as we have, you might want to check out the whole collection.

If you are a homeowner, or otherwise in a position to make big changes to your bathroom, you know there are a lot of ways that you can design a space like this. With a thousand different styles available for bath vanity, tub, shower, and every other bathroom element, it can be hard to figure out your style. I’m not going to talk too much about style here, but I will touch on it from time to time. But there are some other, more general considerations to make, in order to get the most out of your bathroom building/renovation, without breaking your budget or setting decisions in stone that you will later regret. Here are the top 3 design elements that, I believe, go into making a truly awesome bathroom.

  1. Absolute Water Tightness. If I’m going to spend money on something, I’m going to make sure that my bathroom is absolutely impervious to mold and mildew. This means that I am caulking around the tub, bath vanity, and every edge that could come into contact with liquid water or steam. I’m also going to make sure that the motorized vent on the ceiling is operational and in good repair. Little did I know for the first two years I owned my first house that this vent didn’t actually go anywhere. It was just whirring up there on the ceiling, doing nothing, because the first owner of the house wanted to save money. I had to have the ceiling bored through so that steam could escape at all, a very pricey fix for something that should never have been left in the ceiling at all. Now there is no mold or mildew. We also invested in professional tiling in parts of the shower that make me know that black mold will never creep behind me in this room.1
  2. Functional Fixtures. Take a look at Modern Bathroom to see the best in modern bathroom implements, especially the bath vanity. I mention this, because we looked high and low for an appropriate bath vanity, one with two sinks/vessels for me and my wife, and sufficient height for my 6’7” frame. We finally found one, bought it new, and had it installed, but we looked for 3 months before we found the right one. If you plan to live in your home for years to come, it pays to wait for the perfect bath vanity, tub, or shower before having one installed. If you settle for something that isn’t perfect, you’ll regret it later. We spent a couple years finding the perfect materials for our bathroom, but now that it’s done, we’re happy and good from another 10 years.
  3. Easy Equity/Resale Elements. Chances are that you will not live in your house forever. If you plan to ever move, it’s important to make a bathroom that will be impressive to a future buyer. We chose a two sink bath vanity for our use, but also because this would make our house more attractive to couples and families who might one day buy it (and pay more for it than single occupants). Bathrooms tend to have a really good equity return on money that you invest in them, so don’t worry too much about spending a good bit to modernize this space, especially if you think you are going to sell in the next five years.

When you finish your bathroom, you’ll be happy. You’ll want to hang out there day and night. And when you do, you’ll be glad that you designed it thoughtfully and that everything works as it should. Enjoy that shower, that bath vanity, that awesome clawfoot tub. You’ve earned it.

featureBanner advertising is one of the most common forms of advertising on the planet and unless you live in the stones ages (which I’m sure you don’t), you’ll likely come across banner advertising in some shape or form every single day. Even if you’re a bit of a recluse and rarely leave the house, you’ll likely come across the newer, more modern form of banner advertising whenever you browse the web, as it’s literally on every website you visit these days. Clouds computing is such a new phenomenon on the Internet technology landscape that there is often no clear idea how to protect from threats to cloud computing. However, last year, an organization called The Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) created a list of the biggest threats the nascent industry. In all, they identified nine threats to cloud computing.
