30 Inspiring Poster Designs

Web designers typically turn to other websites for design inspiration, but sometimes it is good to look at other mediums to get a different perspective on design. One of my favorite alternatives for inspiration is poster design. By looking at great posters, you can learn a lot about composition, typography, and use of color.

    These are definitely inspiring – the use of color in the first poster is beautiful and understated with the pop of light blue. Many of these would work equally well as the front panel of a marketing brochure.

    GenX and Art Attack 06 posters are very nice. Some of the others are nice but not sure they would be effective in getting the message across. Nice set. Shows what quality design can deliver.

    Honestly, the above may be “pretty” posters, but certainly not great posters.

    Like most works of art, good or bad, these can be used as reference resources. Artists should be able to learn from most things around us.

    When it comes to great poster design though, you can never lose sight of the fact that it’s commercial art (vs. fine art), meaning, it needs to sell the consumer something. And none of the above examples are successful in doing that.

    “Pretty” and “Nice” are not the accolades you want to hear — “Compelling” is.

    Don’t get it at all. I honestly can’t tell what some of then are promoting – nice colours a swirly retro patterns – stuff that I can see in a blur all around Manchester’s Northern Quarter. I agree with the last post posters need to sell something. They don’t pretty but unimpressed.

    Awesome collection, I would love to see some of these actually screen printed out. Digital posters don’t get you the texture and feel of the real thing.

Every once in awhile when I am poised to design something, I think, “Tone it down, Jen–don’t get all crazy…” But this site reminds me that I should trust my instincts and create what I’m compelled to create, and that the world not only might be able to understand it but truly appreciate it.     I like to post this comment .It helps a lot.The one thing I do know for sure, if that day comes, is that when it’s wedding cake cutting time, I will NOT make the same mistake I witness at every wedding. I will not be serving Champagne with dessert, but rather the slightly sweet and fizzy dessert wine,..

    Most of these are unreadable and cluttered. While a few of them might be able to pass as fine art, none of them would work commercially.

    And is it just me, or are ALL of these design blogs clones of each other? They all have the “30-80 Beautiful/Inspiring/Whatever Examples of Good Design” posts, all of which are the same old crap, done by “professionals” (in reality they are just graphic designers fresh out of college, or even wannabes fresh out of high school), with the majority of the designs being specifically FOR other designers (i.e. design workshop/convention/etc).

    Where are the blogs with PRACTICAL examples of good design? I want to see some designs that are commercially viable, not just “art” made for other art students. The vast majority of us designers are in it for the money; although it can be fun to impress peers, impressing clients and customers should be the real objective.
