100 Outstanding Login Forms

This post is to be of inspiration and a guide to overall good interface design, we will ultimately focus on one important aspect of graphic user interface design that helps users interact with your site and enter areas that require login credentials.

As you’re in the process of designing a login form/area you might yourself face to face with a few vital questions: i.e. Will I display the name of the form as login, log in or sign in? How will I design the graphical aesthetics of the login (or log in/sign in) area? Where should the forgotten password link be displayed? What if I were to include a cancellation button? Should I use graphics and transparent properties that will match the overall design of my site? And so on..

No matter the question pertaining to your login form, there are always multiple solutions to your concerns. This is why we’ve done our research and collected 100 of the most beautiful sites with outstanding login forms for your inspiration.

Hopefully these sites will open up your mind to the endless and creative possibilities you can explore when designing this aspect of your site.

I agree with Carl Helmertz. I agree that there certainly can be mangled login forms, but in general, all those logins look practically identical, and that’s because you it’s difficult to have a functional login page without organizing it that way. Do you have some examples of bad login pages? Ones that are actually on usable sites? (not just sites that are horrible across the board.)

All of these suck!

Yes they look good, but usability should be number one… just my opinion as a user.

For instance I love e-junkie. All common actions without clicking.

Some really nice forms in there, and some that are… well, not so outstanding. Photoshop.com or DreamHost, for example, are really quite ordinary.

You really shouldn’t use width=”?” and height=”?” in images. IE thinks it means width=”1″ height=”1″. And don’t say you should use Firefox or Chrome or Opera or something.

We encounter login forms everyday in great numbers. We have learned to take them for granted. This post will perhaps make many of us take a fresh look at login forms.

I guess it’s futile to select one of these as my favorite or the best in the list. The collection is truly awesome and pretty exhaustive.

Wow, here is another example where folks think that clever graphics is more important than usability. Serious designers should read Designing the Moment by Robert Hoekman who has a lot to say about this particular topic.

As other commenters have pointed out, there are many of those examples that are far from outstanding from a usability perspective.

For example, look at the FLV player example – where is the “Log in” button? Is it the blank button underneath the form? The “Signup” button looks like the primary call to action on the page..

A better way to think of this list is as an excellent resource for quickly gaining an overview of a variety of design options, rather than simply labelling them all as “outstanding”
