Hey guys, I was trying to style the "select" menu for a website using css. The PSD I was slicing had a gradient drop down select image. I tried adding a background url, but I couldn't get it to work?

Is it necessary to slice a design before coding it? I've heard that it's possible to design a template in photoshop and code it without slicing. Any pointers?
